GMC will reportedly add bi-directional charging capabilities to the already-long list of standard features on the Hummer EV Pickup and Hummer EV SUV, reports Automotive News.

MY2024 variants will benefit from upgraded 19.2-kilowatt Level 2 charging on specific model grades. This will enable the vehicle to charge faster and send up to 6 kW to other electric cars. Bi-directional charging would come in handy in emergencies, with Hummer owners now able to assist motorists who have depleted their EV batteries.

"You could not effectively take power from the battery in this vehicle and put it into another vehicle," explained Aaron Pfau, the lead development engineer for the reborn electric Hummer. "The 19.2-kilowatt charger [and] Level 2 AC charger that we have on board, that is really the key change that enables this."

GMC has said it will also offer an accessory allowing the Hummer EV to power appliances - like a projector or power tools, for example, at up to 3 kW.

The bi-directional capabilities and upgraded charging will be made standard on 2024 models equipped with the 2X trim or higher. This includes the 3X and Edition 1 derivatives. However, the accessory that allows for vehicle-to-vehicle charging will be an optional extra.

GMC rival Rivian has also said the R1T, and R1S models will also be made available with the feature through a software update. Not only will this allow Rivian owners to recharge other vehicles, but also power other small electronics and even their homes.

As you'd expect, rival automaker Ford has a similar system on the F-150 Lightning.

When equipped with the ER (Extended Range) battery, the Dearborn electric truck can power a home for up to 10 days. Along with the Home Integration System and Intelligent Backup Power functions, the electric truck will automatically provide power should your home suffer from a blackout. Once power is restored, the system can resort back to grid power.

It's safe to assume the system implemented in the GMC Hummer twins will be very similar to the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV setup. General Motors has previously said that the forthcoming electric truck will be capable of sending energy back to the grid when demand is high. This can potentially make owners money, as the truck will glean electricity in off-peak times when energy rates are lower.
