The third-gen Crosstrek has made its public debut in US spec at the Chicago Auto Show.
The all-new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek has been revealed in US spec at this year's Chicago Auto Show. The USDM reveal takes place five months after the third generation of the crossover was revealed in Japan last year, with the US getting a new Sport trim replete with unique styling elements. Based on the Subaru Impreza Hatchback, the sport trim is akin to the Impreza 2.5 RS that revived a classic nameplate for the new generation. But like that 2.5 RS revival, the Crosstrek Sport isn't as impressive as we might have hoped.
While the JDM models get a hybrid 2.0-liter e-Boxer engine, the US Crosstrek is powered by a 152-horsepower, 2.0-liter Boxer four-cylinder with 145 lb-ft of torque in base trim. The Sport and Limited trims get a new engine, a larger 2.5-liter boxer mill with 182 hp and 178 lb-ft. Power goes to all corners via a CVT transmission. No manual is available, but the Premium, Sport, and Limited trims have a manual mode. All models have 8.7 inches of ground clearance.
Visually, it adopts a new front fascia with a full-width logo bar leading into compact LED headlights. The new grille features complex 3D hexagonal patterns and is finished in matte black with a gloss black logo bar on the new Sport trim. This trim is identifiable by its yellow accents on the front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and yellow Sport badging. It also features black alloy wheels in 18-inch size instead of the 17-inch items on the Base and Premium trims.
The interior features an 11.6-inch portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen as its party piece, standard on higher models where it replaces the seven-inch screen on the base car. Both screens have all the expected Apple CarPlay and Android Auto amenities. Rugged materials help the Crosstrek go wherever you need it to, while the newly-designed seats are said to be more supportive. It's also more practical than before with up to 54.7 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are folded.
The Subaru Global Platform is stiffer than ever, with a 10% increase in torsional rigidity compared to the outgoing model. Not only does this aid handling dynamics, but also makes the car safer. Safety is bolstered further by EyeSight Driver Assist technology which has been updated and operates quicker and smoother than ever in a wider range of conditions. The new wide-field cameras give it a better field of view and updated software. Furthermore, the front-facing camera is better at spotting pedestrians and cyclists.
Four trims will be available: Base Premium, Sport, and Limited, with the base model priced the same as the outgoing model at $24,995.
Unlike Crosstreks of yesteryear, the new model will be built here in America, where the 2.5-liter-equipped models will be built at Subaru's Lafayette, Indiana facility. The Base and Premium trims will still be built in Japan and arrive in the Spring. The US-built models will ship to dealers in the Summer.
