5 Crazy Pikes Peak Crashes

Crash / Comments

These videos prove that Pikes Peak isn't a walk in the park.

It can be easy to forget just how tough the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb really is. Each year the runs seem to get faster and the drivers seem to get braver. Yet virtually each year there's a gnarly crash or two that makes you realize that this hill climb is unlike any other. The videos featured here all have entertainment value in the sense that watching a car wreck is a sight to see. If anything though, these clips should serve as a reminder as to just how brave and skillful you need to be to make it to the top of Pikes Peak in a competitive fashion.

Gary Lee Kanawyer was just seconds away from potentially setting a new Pikes Peak world record (back in 1993) when he veered off course and crashed. This crash may not be as gnarly as some of the other ones on this list, but it is without a doubt the most heartbreaking.

Bobby Regester crashed his modified Pontiac Sunfire in spectacular fashion during the Pikes Peak 2011. The Sunfire was completely destroyed after tumbling down a ridge, but Regester himself miraculously managed to walk away from the crash.

This clip does a great job at showing you the aftermath of a Pikes Peak crash. Said aftermath is shown through a series of photos that highlight just how much of a beating this Evo took when it flipped on the tail end of the course.

Mechanical error was the cause being for Paul Dallenbach amazing wreck at the most recent running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Dallenbach survived the wreck, although his car and a few trees weren't so lucky.

By now you've all seen the video of Jeremy Foley wrecking at Pikes Peak 2012. Foley and his co-pilot were both injured in the horrific crash but will survive. If this crash doesn't prove how difficult and dangerous a run up Pikes Peak can be, then what will?
