Ford is more or less done with the retro look. The latest sketches for the new Mustang prove as much, with the iconic sportscar donning a sleeker and more aerodynamic look to match its smaller and more fuel-efficient engine. This is crushing to many Mustang aficionados, especially those who are old enough to remember the iconic pony cars of the mid-to-late 1960s. For a sizable fee you can own your very own ultra-modern 1965 Shelby G.T.350CR. This contemporary throwback is built by Classic Recreations. New additions include a tubular sub frame chassis with a cosmetic roll bar, coilover suspension on the front and rear and oversized bars. On the inside a Pioneer CD Player with a removable face, four-channel amplifiers, coxial speakers and an Old Air Products A/C system were also added. The entry-level 7.0-liter V8 offers 545 hp while the most powerful model cranks out 1000 hp. Pricing starts at $119,000.

All it takes to get your hands on Retrobuilt's 1969 Shelby GT500 is a 5.0 Mustang Convertible from 2005 or earlier. The company will replace everything on your Stang, save for the doors, adding fiberglass parts designed to give your ride a retro look. HID headlights, vinyl striping and a Shelby wheel and tire package come standard. There's also an option to add a supercharger, Baer brakes and to lower the suspension.

Eckert's Rod Shop has built the equivalent of a retro Frankenstein monster. The Mach40 has the body of a 1969 Mustang Mach 1 and the powertrain of a GT40. Powering this beast is a supercharged 5.4-liter engine. Oh, it's also flex-fuel. Power output is said to be 850 hp.

In addition to offering a convertible Mustang circa 1965, Classic Recreations also builds the G.T.500CR circa 1967. Modern additions to the remake include state-of-the-art suspension, power rack and pinion steering and a Tremec five-speed manual transmission. The hand-built 427 cubic inch 7.0-liter V8 with direct injection comes in at 545 hp. The next-level G.T.500CR 900S features an F1-R Intercooled ProCharger supercharger that pushes performance to 780 hp.

If you're in the market for a low-end retro Mustang then you might want to check out this hack job from India's Big Daddy Custom. The shop slapped a body kit onto a Chevy Optra in an attempt to make it look like the Shelby GT500, better known as the "Eleanor" Mustang. If you absolutely need to own a retro Mustang and don't have a bunch of cash to spend then this isn't a bad route. It's not good, but it could be worse.
