600-HP Nissan Frontier R Coming To Fight The Ranger Raptor

Trucks / Comments

Get ready for a GT-R-powered Nissan Frontier.

For the 2022 model year, the Nissan Frontier was given a belated redesign for the first time in 16 years. With its bolder styling, a more high-tech cabin, and a new, more powerful V6 engine, the new Frontier is a formidable foe to the Ford Ranger.

Since the new Frontier isn't scheduled to go on sale until the summer, we weren't expecting the midsize pickup to receive any more major updates. But Nissan has surprised us all by announcing the development of a hardcore performance variant of the Frontier that will go after the Ford Ranger Raptor - and it's being designed specifically for the American market.

Ford still refuses to sell the Ranger Raptor in the US, so Nissan's rival performance pickup will finally fill the void. Under the hood, the new Frontier is powered by a 3.8-liter V6 engine producing 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque, but the hardcore variant will get the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 that powers the Nissan GT-R Nismo.

With 600 hp on tap, the hardcore Nissan Frontier, which will be badged as the Frontier R, will have nearly twice as much power as the regular model. 0-62 mph will take just 4.5 seconds, which is considerably faster than the Ranger Raptor.

To improve the Frontier R's off-roading capability, Nissan will add a five-link rear suspension setup with coil springs and Fox shocks. The ride height has also been increased by five inches to improve the ground clearance when tackling tough terrain. The Nissan Frontier R will ride on larger 18-inch wheels replacing the standard 16-inch wheels, wrapped in massive off-roading tires.

Nissan hasn't released any teaser images yet, but the Frontier R will feature more aggressive styling cues including unique bumpers, a larger grille, and wider fenders. Expect the Frontier R to be considerably more expensive than the regular truck, which starts at $27,670. First deliveries are expected to start on April 1, 2022. Ironically, this means the GT-R-powered Frontier will arrive before the long-awaited next-generation Nissan GT-R.
