Volvo offshoot Polestar has been doing remarkably well as a standalone brand. After kicking things off with the Polestar 1, the electric automaker has been working on a number of new cars. One of the most exciting is the Polestar 5, a high-performance electric four-door GT that was previewed by the Precept concept in March. We're very intrigued about this car and learned earlier this month that we would get to see a prototype at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. That has now happened, and at the same time, the EV manufacturer has revealed all the technical specifications of the sexy new offering.

This is the first time that the company is showing a development prototype of the car in public, and the brand's head of R&D in the UK, Pete Allen, is understandably excited: "Polestar 5 is shaping up to be a superb four-door GT and a true Polestar at heart. The platform combines low-volume performance car attributes with modern technological advances to bring lightweight, high-rigidity sports car chassis technology into mass production."

A new mechanical platform with a unique bonded aluminum chassis means that this should handle beautifully for an EV, but what about power figures? Well, the development of "a new top-of-the-line electric powertrain is ongoing," but the goals for this setup are lofty.

Polestar says that its new rear electric motor will "provide superior output, along with 800-volt architecture," meaning super-fast charging. Combined with the high-output front electric motor, the Polestar 5 aims to deliver 872 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque. By contrast, the Polestar 2 produces up to 408 hp and 487 lb-ft from a dual-motor setup.

Polestar has not said what the weight or acceleration targets are, but we should get an idea of its performance shortly; the Polestar 5 will run up the Goodwood hill twice daily during the event in the "First Glance" group. A launch is planned for 2024, after which the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 SUVs will arrive.

"Polestar 5 is a company-defining project," says CEO Thomas Ingenlath. "Its progressive design and advanced engineering set the tone for Polestar's future. We have great talent on board enabling us to create truly iconic EVs."
