It looks like a GT3 RS at first, but the sound of its turbocharged engine gave the game away.
The most extreme version of the 992-generation Porsche 911, the GT2 RS, has been spied undergoing performance testing at the Nurburgring. Porsche already has over 25 variants of the 911 for sale in the USA - including all-wheel-drive derivatives and various body styles - but the new GT2 RS will be the quickest of them all when it arrives in 2026. The previous one was a beast on track, setting numerous lap records in the USA and across the globe.
As our spy photographers pointed out, these images make it seem like we're looking at a GT3 RS prototype, complete with fake center tailpipes, but the sound of the turbocharged engine is unmistakable. The GT3 RS, of course, is naturally aspirated, so it has a distinct soundtrack of its own. What it won't have are the stupendous outputs of the GT2 RS.
In these spy photos, the unfinished body of this GT2 RS sports a hood with deep vents, an exceptionally low ride height, and a truly enormous rear wing. At the back, we can see a central exhaust outlet which isn't real. Instead, our photographers have pointed out where the two outlets are actually hiding. On this example, there are yellow brake calipers, and like the older model, the new GT2 RS will very likely come with the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) as standard. As on the GT3 RS, there are prominent side intakes, but here they partially conceal the engine's intercoolers.
Elsewhere, we expect that many body panels will be finished in carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), including the entire hood. To save even more weight, the previous GT2 RS came with an optional Weissach Package that shed another 13 or so pounds. This package may be standard on the new GT2 RS, especially since its electrified drivetrain will likely weigh more; Porsche is targeting weight gain of no more than 220 lbs, though.
What will really set this new GT2 RS apart from its predecessor is its electrified powertrain, though. Recent reports suggest that it will be a mild hybrid with over 700 horsepower. The gas engine in the GT2 RS will be based on the one in the current 911 Turbo, which already produces 640 hp in Turbo S guise, and torque will be much higher as well. The mild-hybrid system in the new GT2 RS will be even more advanced than the system used in the 963 LMDh race car, but a 400V system will be used instead of the 800V system appearing in a new generation of fully electric Caymans. As with the 919 Hybrid that spawned the even more extreme 919 Evo, the new GT2 RS will generate electric energy when accelerating.
A fast-shifting dual-clutch automatic transmission is likely, and what's particularly interesting is that an all-electric driving mode will be available. This car will not be electrified for the sake of greater efficiency, though, but more as a means of creating the ultimate 992.
When it gets here in 2026, this could be the first production 911 to cost over $300,000.
