Abarth Celebrates 70th Birthday With Hardcore Models

2019 Geneva Motor Show

Rich racing heritage to be displayed at 2019 Geneva Motor Show.

To mark its 70th anniversary, Abarth will be debuting new 595 esseesse and 124 Rally Tribute models at its stand at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Abarth has already announced special 70th-anniversary editions of its 595 and 124 Spider but the two models being revealed at Geneva will be the most hardcore yet.

The first is the 595 esseesse, which pays homage to the legendary ‘60s tuning kit that boosted the performance of the original Fiat 500 to a serious 32 horsepower. The modern-day equivalent was introduced in 2009 as the 160 hp Abarth 500 and that model proved just as popular as the original. Now, ten years later, the 595 is back with 180 hp to its name and a whole host of performance-enhancing add-ons.

The trademark Abarth exhaust note is provided by a custom-built Akrapovic exhaust system and the 595 esseesse also comes equipped with an upgraded Brembo braking system, performance BMC air filter, Koni FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) rear suspension and 17-inch Supersport alloy wheels.

It is no stripped-out racer either and has a smartphone compatible 7-inch touchscreen incorporating navigation, sports seats with a carbon rear backing and plenty of Abarth-specific detailing both inside and out.

Even more exclusive will be the global debut of the new Abarth 124 Rally Tribute, a road-legal model that celebrates the 124 rally racing car’s impressive achievements last year in the FIA R-GT Cup. Highlights of this limited-edition model, of which only 124 will be built, include a mechanical self-locking differential, dual-mode Record Monza exhaust system and ultralight 17-inch alloy wheels.

The 1.4-liter turbocharged engine has been tuned to deliver 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, perhaps not quite as much as some fans would like but in truth that’s plenty for a car that weighs just over 2,300 pounds. Equipped with a six-speed manual transmission it gets to 62 mph in 6.8 seconds and tops out at 144 mph.

Equipment levels are generous too with automatic climate control, heated leather seats and a nine-speaker Bose sounds system all standard fitment. Available in either Costa Brava Red or Turini White, a carbon fiber hard top is optional for those wanting to enjoy their Abarth 124 Rally Tribute all year round.
