As controversial as the NSX was, it’s proving to be one of the best performance picks of our time.
It’s a funny thing to say about what’s usually seen as a logical and emotionless pursuit, but there’s a lot of love in engineering. One love story, Before Sunrise, characterized it perfectly when its character Celine said, “If there's any kind of magic in this world it must be in the attempt of understanding someone sharing something. I know, it's almost impossible to succeed but who cares really? The answer must be in the attempt.” How does that relate to the Acura NSX?
In every way, in fact. Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained is a pretty logically-minded guy, but he, along with the engineers behind the Acura NSX, know that to truly sell a car, they can’t just make it good. They have to make it an emotional experience, to find and define that magic Celine is talking about.
And though they’ll never manage a seamless connection between man and machine, at least not until Elon Musk’s dreams of neural linking come true, the magic comes from the attempt. Acura started from scratch with the new NSX with the goal of linking the two together, knowing it would never happen in full. And yes, invoking that connection is a quantifiable science, which starts by eliminating delay between driver input and the car’s output. Without that lag, the NSX feels like a glove to its drivers. The refinement of the controls has a large hand in that, but so does the electric motors, which do well to eliminate turbo lag. All of that helps make the NSX a car you can fall in love with.
