Automakers can be extremely funny with the names it comes up with for cars. We've seen funny names before, but Alfa Romeo may have taken the cake with its upcoming SUV. According to Auto Express, the automaker plans on naming its upcoming SUV the Stelvio, after one of the best driving roads in the world. Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne revealed the name of the SUV during a plant tour in Italy. As far as names go, there are worse things to name a vehicle after, but a piece of road has to be one of the oddest we've ever heard of.

The SUV will go on sale in Europe in early 2017, but won't make it to the US until the spring or summer of next year. The Stelvio will sit on a modified Alfa Romeo Giulia platform and will also share the same powertrain from the model. The base Stelvio will most likely come with a 2.0-liter tuborcharged four-cylinder engine that makes roughly 276 hp-just like the sedan. Since the two models would share powertrains, a Quadrifoglio variant of the SUV in the future is a possibility. A SUV named after an iconic road like the Stelvio Pass needs to be fun to drive. Hopefully Alfa Romeo didn't shoot itself in the foot.
