Alfa Romeo has announced that the Tonale is finally on its way to US dealers and also used the opportunity to share the EPA-rated fuel consumption figures. According to Alfa, the Tonale is the most efficient plug-in hybrid in the luxury C-segment.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale, equipped with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, has a combined fuel economy of up to 29 mpg as tested by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It also received an official 77 MPGe rating, with a pure electric range of 33 miles. With a fully charged battery, the total range is 360 miles.

"The Alfa Romeo Tonale represents the beginning of our transformation to greater electrification while staying true to the performance characteristics our customers expect from the brand, including a best-in-class 285 horsepower," said Larry Dominique, SVP, head of Alfa Romeo North America.

Those 285 horses come from the Tonale's hybrid system that combines a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-pot engine with a 90 kW electric motor and a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery. This setup results in a rather impressive 347 lb-ft of torque, available almost instantaneously.

Alfa Romeo opted to offer the Tonale exclusively as a plug-in hybrid in the US. This is presumably due to the success of the Dodge Hornet, which is available with a more traditional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pot.

The Dodge Hornet, equipped with the pure gasoline mill, produces 268 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The plug-in hybrid R/T is only expected to arrive in 2024 and won't be as affordable as initially expected. In terms of pricing, the Hornet and Tonale hybrids are pretty close.

Alfa Romeo revealed the pricing of the Tonale earlier this year, which has stayed the same since. The cheapest Tonale Americans can buy starts at $42,995 for the Sprint trim. The mid-spec Ti trim sells for $44,995, while the top-spec Veloce has a sticker price of $47,495. These prices do not include the destination charge, which is $1,595.
