As the automotive industry turns towards electric powertrains, news headlines are filled with the awe-inspiring performance of cars such as the Rimac Nevera and Tesla Model S, but few report on the electric cars that truly matter: public transport vehicles. Sure, they're not the most exciting, but public EV transport is going to have an even larger impact on our daily lives and the health of our planet in years to come.

One area where EVs are sure to make an impact is the public school transportation system. The good old yellow school bus has been doing the rounds for decades, and even though we've covered some pretty awesome examples in our time, the average remains a rather dull sight on the road. The GreenPower motor company plans to change that with its all-electric school bus it likes to call the 'Beast' (Battery Electric Automotive School Transportation).

The Beast is an all-electric 40-foot Type D battery-electric school bus that offers a range of up to 150 miles thanks to a 194-kWh battery pack and seating for up to 90 people. This EV school bus features a monocoque chassis for extra strength and rigidity, along with air suspension to keep its occupants as comfy as possible.

Fraser Atkinson, CEO of GreenPower, believes that the Beast will herald in a new age of public transportation: "The accelerated adoption of zero-emission school buses means a healthier and more sustainable environment for our children and communities. We are confident that the BEAST will drive the future of the all-electric school bus paradigm shift while providing parents the peace of mind knowing their children are safe and protected from diesel emissions and harmful noise pollution".

GreenPower will start with initial deliveries in the coming weeks and expects a big boom in orders by the end of the year. The company has already increased its production from five to ten units after President Biden's Federal Infrastructure Plan announcement that aims to make switching to EVs a smarter and more practical choice for more citizens countrywide. The company is getting ready to showcase its purpose-built, all-electric, zero-emissions school bus at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo from this week, starting on the 1st of September at the Long Beach Convention Center, situated on the Long Beach waterfront in California
