Why even bother with the old Encore?
Although Buick has discontinued traditional sedans such as the Verano and LaCrosse, it's upping its game with crossovers. Sales of its Encore and Enclave, in particular, continue to be strong, but there's about to be a new player in the lineup, the Encore GX. For the time being, Buick will sell both the Encore and new 2020 Encore GX subcompact crossovers alongside each other, and already the latter is looking very promising in not only design but also pricing.
CarsDirect has made an interesting pricing discovery regarding the 2020 Encore GX's order guide. In short, it may actually be cheaper than the older Encore. The 2020 Encore GX is priced from $25,095 with destination, which is actually $900 more than the cheapest Encore. But here's the catch: base trim Encores are not included in incentive offers.
Move up a trim level, and the Encore reaches $25,595 - $500 more than the base Encore GX, and it doesn't stop there. The front-wheel-drive Encore GX Essence trim is priced from $29,495 - $800 less than a comparatively equipped Encore Essence. The Encore GX is powered by a standard 1.2-liter turbocharged engine with 137 horsepower for FWD versions only. Opting for AWD gets you a more powerful engine and a nine-speed automatic transmission instead of the base CVT. Size-wise, the Encore GX is about 3 inches longer than the Encore. Passenger space is nearly the same, but the Encore GX has an additional 4.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row.
Meanwhile, the Encore will no longer be sold with the optional 1.4-liter turbo engine. Although Buick has made nothing official, it sure sounds like the Encore is being phased out in favor of the new Encore GX. And chances are the Encore GX will be a solid sales success against its rivals.
For example, the highly regarded Lexus UX has a starting price of $33,325, over $8,000 more than a base Encore GX. Buick is equipping the Encore GX with in-demand features such as automatic emergency braking as standard, so it sure sounds like it's shaping up to be a subcompact luxury crossover bargain.
