All-New Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe Breaks Cover


Sexy beast unleashed with 503 hp.

Just a few weeks ahead of its public unveiling in Frankfurt, the all-new second-generation Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe has broken cover. Taking the fight to the BMW M4, Audi RS5 and Lexus RC-F, the hi-po coupe uses the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 from the C63 sedan and wagon, but surrounds it in a muscular, sleeker body. The range-topping C63 S sends 502 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels, a jump of 23 hp and 74 lb-ft over the 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8 used by the first gen C63.

It’s also comfortably more powerful (especially with regards to torque) than any other model in its class. With a 0-62 mph time of 3.9 seconds, the new C63 is 0.4 seconds quicker than its predecessor, while top speed can be lifted from 155 to 180 mph with a new Driver’s Package. AMG’s seven-speed Speedshift MCT automatic box comes with a shorter final drive than the C63 sedan, and operates with a mechanical locking differential, or with a more responsive electronic diff in the C63 S. Compared to the styling of the C-Class Coupe, the C63 shares the same frameless doors, roof and boot lid. And that’s about it.

The remainder of the car has been uniquely styled with fat front and rear fenders, a heavily revised chassis featuring four-link and multi-link front/rear suspension, unique tracks that can house wider rubber, and signature AMG touches. There’s an aluminum powerdome hood, a typically menacing front end with a heavily reworked bumper, integral splitter, and prominent grille with enlarged Silver Star emblem. At the back we see a new rear bumper with a diffuser flanked by a trapezoidal quad exhaust, and subtle trunk-mounted spoiler. Highlights of the plush, driver-focused interior include the Artico/Dinamica sport seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and AMG-specific controls, instruments, gear shifter, and trim.
