Allow the Sun to Recharge Your BMW i8

Concepts

Energy supply is as sustainable as the car.

BMW DesignworksUSA has created a must-have charging station for BMW i3 and i8 owners residing in sunny climes. The i solar carport concept has been designed to work with the carmaker’s latest EVs and is made of renewable bamboo wood, carbon-fiber and “glass-on-glass” solar modules that generate electricity. In actual fact, owners can be living in parts of the world that experience months of perpetual darkness as the charging station can access the electrical grid as well as make the most of solar energy.

A BMW i Wallbox Pro system works in tandem with the carport, showing the amount of energy going into the car while providing analysis of the charging process. Project leader Tom Allemann said: "With the solar carport concept we opted for a holistic approach: not only is the vehicle itself sustainable, but so is its energy supply. This is therefore an entirely new generation of carports that allows energy to be produced in a simple and transparent way."
