Subaru has confirmed a new special edition WRX STI will debut at Detroit next month. A trademark suggests it will be called the S209.
Last month saw the reveal of the most powerful WRX STI ever with 349 hp under the hood. Sadly, it was exclusive to the South African market and one of a countless number of special edition WRX STIs that America has been deprived of. Thankfully, that's about to change because we're finally getting the hardcore Subaru WRX STI we've been craving for. A few days ago, a US trademark filing was uncovered suggesting that Subaru will release a special edition WRX STI called the S209, which sounded like a successor to the S208 launched exclusively in Japan.
Now, Subaru has released a teaser video confirming that a special edition WRX STI is coming to America for the first time. The name hasn't been confirmed, but Subaru says the hardcore WRX STI will make its world debut at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show next month. "Something special from Subaru Tecnica International is coming to America for the first time ever. 1/14/19 at the North American International Auto Show," Subaru wrote in the video description.
The video shows a camouflaged WRX STI racing around Virginia International Raceway with a host of track-focused upgrades including a massive rear wing, front dive planes, and gold BBS wheels. We're also expecting upgrades from the limited-edition S208 to carry over, which featured 19-inch BBS wheels, quicker steering rack, adjustable Bilstein dampers, a carbon-fiber roof, and STI Recaro bucket sports seats. Power was increased to 324 hp and 319 lb-ft of torque, up from 310 hp and 295 lb-ft in the standard STI. Only 450 examples were built, so the S209 will likely be built in limited numbers and sold exclusively in the US.
