It's no secret that Ford is currently developing the US market version of the global Ford Ranger. Yes, it turned out to be a mistake to discontinue the mid-size pickup truck after all. At least Ford is making amends. We'll have to wait until the 2019 model year for that new Ranger to arrive, but in the meantime the global Ranger lives on, and a new special edition version will debut next at Frankfurt. Meet the new Ranger Black Edition. It's not just a clever name.

Based on the Limited trim, the Ranger Black Edition comes with a de-chromed body painted in Absolute Black as well as a black finish for the radiator, alloy wheels sports bar and exterior detailing. Only 2,500 examples are planned, all of which will be Double Cabs. Other standard features include satellite NAV, front parking sensors and rear view camera, Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system, an 8-inch touchscreen, dual-zone electronic climate control, leather seats, and power-folding, heated door mirrors. Turns out the Ford Ranger also happens to be Europe's best-selling pickup truck. It's not like it has that many competitors, but it's still testament to the fact that Ford knows how to build a solid, smaller truck that's not the F-150.

Ford claims a total of 23,100 Ranger sales for July 2017 year-to-date, which is actually an increase of 12.1 percent over the previous year. Looking at this Ranger Black Edition only gets us even more excited for 2019.
