The long wheelbase model is getting the finishing touches.
Our spy photographers recently spotted the 2024 Volkswagen ID. Buzz testing in test mule form, even though the electric van already launched in global markets. Volkswagen has yet to release the US-spec model, which will be longer by more than 10 inches. The US will not receive the short-wheelbase ID. Buzz, while other countries will have a choice between it and the long-wheelbase variant.
These images give us a great idea of what the US market ID. Buzz will look like, though this prototype clearly lacks any of the van's exciting color schemes. As promised, VW has retained the short front and rear overhangs, increasing the length by stretching the wheelbase only.
It's difficult to tell how the LWB version differs from the standard SWB ID. Buzz without seeing the two next to each other. The easiest way to spot the LWB is by looking at the sliding rear doors, which are clearly longer here. By adding 10.6 inches to the wheelbase, the North American ID. Buzz will measure 196.1 inches long, which is significantly shorter than gas-powered minivans like the Kia Carnival and Toyota Sienna.
Overall length is deceptive, though, since the ID Buzz has such short overhangs. It may be shorter than any gasoline equivalent in overall length, but the wheelbase on the VW should be longer, providing more space inside, especially in the third row. Without an engine to house, interior comfort and practicality should be excellent.
VW has not announced US pricing yet, but the base ID. Buzz will include a single electric motor producing 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque. Since American buyers crave power, we imagine VW will also offer a dual-motor model producing around 300 hp. As for the range, VW is targeting around 260 miles for the RWD variant, meaning the dual-motor AWD variant would be rated slightly below that number.
The ID. Buzz won't arrive in the US until 2024, so there is plenty of time before this information becomes publicly available. Hopefully, our retro electric van won't be far from the sub-$60k base price of the euro version.
