ASAP Rocky Gives Custom Yellow Hummer EV Old-School Hip-Hop Flavor

Electric Vehicles / Comments

The eccentric EV was recently spotted in New York.

In recent years, few vehicles have enjoyed as strong a relationship with celebrities as the Hummer. The H1 was the apple of Arnold Schwarzenegger's eye, and the H2 later became the must-have automotive accessory for the world's rappers and hip-hop stars. When the marque was killed off by General Motors, A-listers turned to other high-end SUVs, such as the Escalade and G-Class.

Now Hummer is back, as an all-electric model range within the GMC portfolio. Despite the lack of a gas-guzzling V8, the new variants retain the iconic styling and go-anywhere ability favored by the red carpet set. It comes as no surprise then that acclaimed rapper and record executive ASAP Rocky has added an example of the Hummer EV Pickup to his extensive car collection.

Custom wheel manufacturer Forgiato recently shared images (taken by cars.of.ny) of the Hummer on its Instagram page. Painted in what appears to be Hummer's famed Competition Yellow, ASAP Rocky's example transports us straight back to the mid-2000s. Sitting on a set of massive Forgiato wheels, the EV looks ready for a cameo in a flashy hip-hop video.

We're guessing the two-time Grammy nominee put his name down rather early for the Edition 1, a top-of-the-line offering that started heading to customers late last year. Reservations for this limited edition model sold out in less than an hour despite the estimated price tag of $110,295.

Those that have since received their vehicles stand to make a tidy profit; we've seen some examples selling for over $200,000.

It's unlikely that the Fashion Killa rapper bought his Hummer as an investment, though. ASAP Rocky (whose real name is Rakim Athelaston Mayers) is known to be quite the gearhead and has been seen driving expensive machinery, including a Ferrari 488GTB and a Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Earlier this year, he also teamed up with Mercedes-Benz through his "creative foundation," known as AWGE. Several short videos posted on the artist's Instagram page previewed the collaboration while showcasing the iconic W140 S-Class and the awe-inspiring F200 Concept.

It's no secret that celebrities can often ruin great cars with their outlandish requirements. But there's something so extravagant and farcical with the electric Hummer that we can't help but love it.

Looking like a great big Tonka toy on the quiet New York street, it's not the last word in restrained good taste, but it's fun. It should be rather fast, too. The Edition 1 comes equipped with three electric motors, which provide a heady 1,000 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque.

Despite the scale-bending weight of 9,063 lbs, GMC claims a 0 to 60 mph time of around three seconds. To put that into perspective, this massive electric truck accelerates nearly as quickly as a Corvette C8 Stingray, a car that weighs almost three times less.

GMC claims a usable 329 miles of maximum driving range. When plugged into a fast charger, owners should be able to glean 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
