The upcoming Valhalla will get it first.
The Aston Martin Valhalla is, as of now, still scheduled to hit the scene in 2022. But instead of it utilizing one of the automaker's existing engines, such as the AMG-sourced twin-turbo V8, it will come powered by something entirely new. Aston Martin has just announced its all-new 3.0-liter turbocharged V6, its first in-house built engine since 1969. Not only will it power the Valhalla, but also a range of new mid-engined sports cars whose details still remain a secret.
This new V6, however, also has a secret sauce: electrification. The company is also developing new hybrid systems including both regular hybrid and plug-in hybrids that will be paired to the V6.
In other words, this brand new engine has been specifically engineered to work in conjunction with hybrid assist, instead of taking an existing engine and modifying it accordingly. The result of this approach will be Aston's most powerful engine in its entire range. Just to compare, the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, currently the most powerful model offered, is powered by a twin-turbo 5.2-liter V12 totaling 715 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. No exact power figures have been provided at the moment, but given what that V12 is capable of, the new V6 will be quite something.
What's more, it'll be compact and lightweight thanks to its 'hot V' structure, weighing less than 440 pounds. And in case you're wondering, it is compact enough to fit in both front and mid-engined vehicles.
But for the upcoming Valhalla, it'll be mounted directly behind the driver and fitted with a dry sump system to ensure the lowest possible center of gravity. Aston also promises the engine will meet all Euro 7 fuel emission requirements.
"Investing in your own powertrains is a tall order, but our team have risen to the challenge," said Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer. "Moving forward, this power unit will be integral to a lot of what we do and the first signs of what this engine will achieve are incredibly promising."
