When we think of high priced auctions, we usually see expected price tags of $4 million or even $8 million, but a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa shattered all the previous expectations with a record setting price of $16.4 million at Monterey. Ferrari racers in general sell for a lot of money, but lately Testa Rossas have been doing quite well and have been fetching very high price tags and breaking auction records. This 1957 Testa Rossa stands out because it is a prototype, which it makes it even more special.

The Testa Rossa seen in these photos was also the first in a long series of race-winning "red-hed" designs that continued into the early 1960s. There were several factors that made the Testa Rossa very appealing to buyers and helped the vintage Ferrari prototype shatter all previous auction marks. The first factor was that the Testa Rossa has a racing record spanning over several years that includes top tracks and very well-known drivers. It also underwent a top-of-the-line restoration and won a best-in-class award at Pebble Beach back in 2006.

The second factor is that the Testa Rossa has a well-documented ownership and is certified by Ferrari's Classiche department for authenticity. This extremely rare Testa Rossa truly sets the benchmark not just for auction sales, but also for being such a unique prototype with an incredibly acclaimed history.
