Audi Q3 Just As Safe As Its Siblings

Safety Technology / Comments

Audi's smallest crossover is just as safe as its bigger brothers.

Although five-star safety ratings have become the expected standard for any new vehicle hoping to win over the hearts of buyers, it's easy to take for granted how safe new vehicles have become and the innovative safety technologies that were once the preserve of only luxury vehicles. The latest recipient of a five-star safety rating is the compact Audi Q3 after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released its results.

The rating applies to both the 2019 and 2020 Q3 model years and sees the small crossover joining the bigger Audi Q5 in achieving the NHTSA's five-star overall score. Of course, the Q3 starts at $34,700, nearly $10,000 less than the Q5, so small families who prioritize safety but can't quite stretch to the Q5 will find the same peace of mind in the smaller of the two crossovers.

The Q3's impressive safety credentials are bolstered by the standard fitment of Audi's pre sense basic. Similar to Mercedes' pre-safe system, Audi's equivalent can detect an impending collision and prepare the car for it by shutting the windows and sunroof. The seat belts are also automatically pre-tensioned in such a scenario. Added to this, Audi pre sense front alerts the driver of potential hazards by means of a front-mounted camera, along with a radar sensor.

The system will then trigger both visual and audible warnings so that the driver can take the necessary evasive actions. The 2020 Audi Q3 is also fitted with standard cruise control, high-beam assist, hill descent assist, eight airbags, and the obligatory rearview camera. While it scored at least four stars in every test, the side crash results were especially impressive, with five stars in every category.

It's yet another feather in the cap of the impressive Q3, which goes up against other subcompact luxury SUVs like the BMW X1, Lexus UX, and Mercedes-Benz GLB. We were particularly impressed with the Q3's ride comfort, interior layout and design, and the available technologies like adaptive cruise control, park assist, and a top-view camera system. It's now also proven to be one of the safest small luxury SUVs you can buy.
