Audi Announces Its Next Electric SUV

The e-tron's retirement date is now known.

In March, Audi announced that it would stop the production of internal combustion engines in the near future and is fully committed to an all-electric future. It hopes that by 2025, it will be able to offer 20 all-electric vehicles, and judging by the performance of its current EV lineup - which includes the Audi e-tron and the performance-focused RS e-tron GT - Audi is certainly heading in the right direction.

The e-tron SUV, Audi's first dedicated electric vehicle, is due for a refresh any day now, and the brand has even promised a massive battery upgrade for 2022, but there's something even better around the corner. Audi has disclosed its plan to replace the e-tron with the Q8 e-tron in 2026. The new car will be entirely new and ride on a dedicated EV platform, instead of the modified MLB platform used on the current e-tron.

Audi has said that the Q8 e-tron will be assembled at its Forest facility in Belgium, where the e-tron Sportback is currently being produced. Spy shots of the prototype Q8 e-tron show a car that is noticeably refined from the current e-tron range and features a redesigned grille with hexagonal shapes instead of the traditional horizontal and vertical lines and sleek headlights.

Futuristic features such as camera wing mirrors are a cool touch, and the rear-end also gets a new look. The Q8 e-tron, which only arrives in 2026, should spawn a Sportback version soon after its launch, but Audi is still tight-lipped about the finer details.

"The future will be electric," says Audi's Chairman of the Board of Directors, Markus Duesmann. "Our factory in Forest is carbon neutral. And when we deliver a new vehicle, it is with a 'zero emissions' perspective. Based on this experience, the next car produced here will be the Audi Q8 e-tron, the electric successor to the current e-tron. This choice can be explained by the current success."

The Q8 e-tron will join an impressive lineup come 2026 which will include the soon-to-be-launched Q6 e-tron, the first model to make use of the PPE platform that was co-developed by Porsche. Your move, BMW.
