Audi has given the green light to the new range-topping Q8, a high-end crossover SUV that will crown the brand's range of sportier, Range Rover-rivaling 4x4s. According to Car magazine, the Audi Q8 will share the new platform developed for the next-gen Q7/Cayenne/Touareg - a long-wheelbase version of the next MLB architecture. Currently, Audi Q models adopt odd numbers, its Q3, Q5 and Q7 models representing the line of regular, boxy SUVs, with even-numbered Q2, Q4, Q6 and Q8 modles to be more coupe-like.

The new Q8 will boast an aluminum-dominated structure that some say will be 300kg lighter than the lumpy Q7. Stylistically think of a crossover A7 or A8, with Audi's limo set to spawn a multitude of new models including a LWB A8 and a four-seater A9 coupe. A range of V6 and V8 gasoline and diesel engines will power the Q8. There'll also be room for a range of plug-in hybrids and a 550-horsepower RS variant, taking the fight to sister-company Porsche's Cayenne Turbo S. Audi is still in the advanced planning stage of the Q8's production, so don't expect to see it in showrooms any time before 2017.
