Despite the challenges brought on by the ongoing pandemic, many automakers ended 2020 on a high with record sales. Bentley, for example, celebrated its best-ever sales year, while VW's Q4 2020 sales increased by 11 percent in the US. Now, Audi has released its global sales figures for Q4 2020, and the German automaker has a lot to celebrate. Between October and December last year, Audi delivered 505,583 cars worldwide, making Q4 2020 the most successful quarter-year in the company's history. This was also the first time the company has delivered more than half a million cars in a quarter.

It's not all good news, however. In total, Audi delivered 1,692,773 models in 2020, a fall of 8.3 percent compared to the previous year due to restrictions during the pandemic. "Thanks to an extremely strong performance internationally by our team, around the middle of last year we emerged from the first wave of corona."

Following a strong third quarter, this made a major contribution to the successful final push in 2020," says Hildegard Wortmann, Board Member for Sales and Marketing at Audi. "The global situation continues to be challenging at present. Nevertheless, for 2021 we have set ourselves ambitious targets, aim to achieve continued growth, and view the future with optimism."

China remains Audi's largest market with 727,358 models sold last year, a rise of 5.4 percent. Audi's Q4 2020 sales were also up by 7.7 percent in China with 214,467 cars sold, which helped Audi achieve a new Q4 sales record. Audi's US sales, on the other hand, were down by 16.7 percent in 2020 with 186,620 cars delivered. However, since demand for SUVs is stronger than ever, Audi is confident the "outlook for 2021 is favorable" in the US.

In 2020, SUVs made up 66 percent of Audi's US sales, increasing to 74 percent in Q4. Among Audi's best-selling SUVs last year in the US were the Q3 (+83.9 percent) and the Audi e-tron (+10 percent). In Europe, car deliveries declined by 19.5 percent to 619,723 units, while Q4 2020 sales increased by 2.5 percent.

Demand for the electric Audi e-tron also spiked significantly. Compared to 2019, sales of the Audi e-tron and e-tron Sportback increased by 79.5 percent worldwide with 47,324 cars sold, making it the best-selling German premium EV in the world.

In Germany, e-tron sales also doubled in the final quarter compared to the previous year. Other strong sellers include the Audi Q3 (+18.1% percent compared to the previous year) and the Audi A6 (+11.8 percent). High-performance models from Audi Sport were also popular last year with global sales increasing by 16.1 percent compared to last year helped by new model launches like the RS Q8 and RS6 Avant.
