Mitigating bad noises and enhancing good ones is very important at Audi.
Audi is one of the world's premier automakers, and as such, the research and development that goes into continuously improving its cars never stops. The German brand has recently refreshed its 2022 lineup with a host of enhancements and has updated its sporty RS models too. But what you may not know is that, from the moment that Audi starts developing its cars, sound is a very important factor, both as a positive and as a negative aspect. Keeping unwanted noises out while enhancing those that sound good is a tricky challenge, but the German automaker is telling us that it definitely knows what it's doing in this regard.
When Audi says that it takes sound tuning seriously, it really means it. Everything from the sound of the turn signal to the acoustic feedback from the infotainment system gets carefully considered and fine-tuned. Even the buttons and switches are tested to ensure that their operation sounds just right.
While generating good sounds is important, keeping bad noises out is arguably even more necessary. To help engineers identify bad sounds, every car is tested on the road, on the vibration track, and on hydropulse equipment. This is a "servo-hydraulic four-stamp test stand that makes the vehicle vibrate."
Audi says that this machine helps its specialists locate noises even when they aren't heard in the place where they arise, and cancelling them out helps the overall experience of driving an Audi to feel even more special.
The automaker has also had to work particularly hard on electric cars like the Audi e-tron, since EV motors cause hardly any oscillations, vibrations, or mechanical noises, so any unwanted sounds seem to be amplified. To counteract this, foam-backed carpeting is applied along with various other techniques to minimize intrusive noise. Furthermore, Audi has developed active noise cancellation tech while performance cars like the SQ5 even have actuators in the exhaust to amplify pleasant sounds. The company has developed an excellent 3D sound system with Bang & Olufsen too, while lower-end models will now benefit from a Sonos audio system. Audi really seems to work very hard on sound tuning, and with a new 5G audio streaming system currently in development, the luxury brand is only getting better.
