Audi Introduces Its Most Affordable Electric Vehicle Ever

This EV is unlike any of Audi's previous models.

Audi's electric vehicle assault has begun, starting with the e-tron SUV. The e-tron will be one of 12 all-new electric Audi models by 2025 ranging from compact up to full-size. One of the upcoming EVs will include the e-tron GT, which is already set to be built in the same factory as the R8. There will likely be less expensive EV models on the way but for now, the $74,800 starting price of the e-tron will keep value-conscious buyers away.

Audi just revealed a cheaper version of the e-tron called the '50,' but the company has yet to reveal if it will be made available in the US market. In the meantime, Audi has revealed a new EV with a far more reasonable starting price. In fact, this new EV costs a fraction of a Tesla Model 3.

Introducing the all-new Audi e-tron e-scooter, a new vehicle combining the benefits of an electric scooter and a skateboard. The e-scooter concept only weighs 26 pounds and has been designed to be folded and transported by car, bus, or train. "With the Audi e-tron Scooter, we appeal to customers who are on the move in cities, sustainably and multi-modally - and for whom style and functionality are important," says Thorsten Schrader, project manager for micro-mobility at Audi.

Riders keep one hand on the e-scooter's handlebar but control it like a skateboard by shifting the weight in their feet. "Of course the e-tron Scooter also moves straight ahead. But the feeling of flow only comes when you start carving on asphalt - and that is surprisingly easy with our new concept," says Schrader.

Audi claims the e-tron e-scooter can travel 12.5 miles on its electric range at speeds of up to 12.5 mph, which is perfect for riders traveling from a train or bus station to their office. Additional range is gathered through regenerative braking from the scooter's hydraulic foot brake.

By the end of 2020, private customers will be able to purchase an e-scooter for around 2,000 euros (around $2,234) and it could be offered as an add-on with the e-tron SUV to be stored and charged via a dedicated socket in the trunk. Audi will even offer decks finished in wood or carbon fiber with black and grey color options.
