It's going to cook.
Once thriving like a mighty t-rex, the turbo diesel took Europe by storm with its ferocity. Now though it is a rarity, with only a handful of vehicles selected to brave the V8's thunder. To this, Audi says no. In a "Jurassic Park"- like attempt, Audi is expected to revive the beastly turbo diesel V8 back to fighting form, but this time packed with a little extra juice. Its expected to be a lot faster, with much more than 400 horsepower and 500 lb ft of torque. That's expected to hurl the all- aluminum A8 to the 62 mph mark in just under 4 seconds.
Audi isn't going to quit that early though, as they are also planning a release of a turbo diesel V6 with an electric supercharger. Yes indeed that is confusing, but if it is exactly as it sounds then this engine could be monumental for the future of forced induction. No more superchargers run off the crank? Yes please. The V8 is slated to be released with the next generation A8 in 2017, but the jury is out on when to expect the V6, suffice it to say it will be soon. This is all very exciting news for Europe, but America will have to wait in the wings to see if it will even be released to it. Especially after dieselgate, getting a legal V8 diesel is not going to be an easy task.
