Reports tip Audi to expand upmarket with a new A9. But just what form will it take?
If you're in the market for an Audi sedan, you've got no shortage of options. There's the new A3, the A4, the A6 and the A8. Plus there's the A5 Sportback and A7 Sportback, which offer slanted rooflines but still with four doors. There are also S versions of each and a few wagon, if that's your thing. But Audi doesn't appear to be slowing down. The latest intel indicates that Audi has applied to trademark the names A9 and S9, suggesting a new flagship model could be in the works.
Just what form the A9 would take, however, remains to be seen. German publication Auto Motor und Sport reports that it would be a four-door model with a sort of off-road character to bridge the gap between a conventional sedan and a crossover, similar to the A4 Allroad and A6 Allroad. That's because, while crossovers tend to borrow their underpinnings from sedans, the A9 could go the other way: Word has it that the A9 would ride on the same platform as the next-generation Q7 crossover. That would make it something of an oddball product, but at this point there are still more questions than answers.
