The German brand was awarded several Top Safety Picks thanks to its conclusive safety system.
Audi is currently on a journey to ramp up the safety of its future e-tron cars via autonomous technologies that will rely on the assistance of 5G connectivity. Looking forward, we can expect cars from the brand that will make daily commuting a lot easier and safer but, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's recent round of crash tests, its current fleet is plenty safe enough.
The 2022 Audi A6, A6 Allroad, A7, Q5 SUV and Sportback, and e-tron SUV and Sportback were all awarded the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ badge while the A4, A5 Sportback, and Q8 were given a Top Safety Pick rating. These form part of a total of 65 cars awarded with the Top Safety Pick+ rating and 36 with a standard Top Safety Pick, making Audi the second most recognized brand in this year's round of testing.
In the crash testing phase, all of Audi's products benefited from a "good" rating. The driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength, and head restraint tests for all cars translated preferable reactions in the event of a collision. Audi's pre sense front package and prevention systems allowed some models to benefit from advanced or superior ratings in the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests.
So, what are the features that gave the cars from Ingolstadt an edge in this highly revered crash testing procedure? Audi accredits this result to eight different safety features that are available as standard or an optional package depending on which model you configure.
The pre sense rear feature employs a set of radar sensors placed in the rear bumper that helps detect a possible rear collision. If the car behind you gets too close for comfort, it will assume control and execute a maneuver that will steer the car clear of danger. The front seatbelts will also be tensioned and the seats automatically adjusted to an optimal position.
Adaptive cruise control has its clear benefits as it manages the acceleration and braking of the car with faster reactions than a human can match. It also can maintain a safe speed and distance from the vehicle ahead of it.
Adaptive cruise assist with stop-and-go technology is the next evolution of its system. This uses a collection of radars, cameras and ultrasonic sensors to gather readings of the surrounding environment and provide intuitive assistance with driving on the highway. When coupled with Active lane assist, steering guidance becomes a key feature that ensures the car does not veer off into the wrong path.
Audi side assist covers those pesky blind spots using a pair of radar sensors fixed to the back of the car. These two devices conduct frequent scans of the vehicle's sides and inform the driver if there is an obstacle positioned where the eye cannot see.
With the parking system plus package, obstacles that appear in front of the car will result in a warning being displayed to the driver via the MMI display screen. Beeping alerts will get louder if you get any closer. For those who frequent dark driving environments through rural areas, Audi's night vision assistant will come in handy. This uses a long-range infrared camera that translates thermal energy to the digital display, giving the driver a clear view of pedestrians or animals that may lie ahead.
The final feature is Audi's forward-facing camera and radar system that detects any threats that may appear on the road. In the event of a hazardous approach, the systems will signify the driver that a collision may be imminent. If it estimates that the driver cannot react fast enough, it will take over and bring the vehicle to a stop.
