Audi's 4.2-Liter V-8 Will Live On in the Next R8

Long live the scream.

After last week’s regrettable confirmation that Audi’s next RS4 would come with a V-6 model rather than the current generation’s beastly 4.2-liter V-8, we’re happy to announce that the 450 horsepower animal will continue to breathe life into the next generation Audi R8. According to Car and Driver, sources within the company promise that the next R8, which will share its platform with the Lamborghini Huracan, will receive an updated version of the 4.2, tuned to deliver even more power.

As such, the base R8 will be naturally-aspirated and forgo the dulling throttle responses and exhaust-muffling of a smaller, turbocharged engine. Meanwhile, the upgrade 5.2-liter V10 engine from the current generation will continue on in the next R8 - this time with additional power tweaks. As the source told C&D, fuel economy and lower emissions are important for the company’s daily-driver models like the RS4. But in the R8, they continue to expect hell-bent performance uber alles.
