Only Audi could make a diesel go this fast and sound this awesome as it tests its new long-tail R18 hybrid racer.
There’s a grand tradition to long-tailed Le Mans racers. Porsche converted its 917 with an aerodynamically-enhanced rear section back in the 70s. Decades later, McLaren did the same with the F1 GTR. And many others have followed. The latest among them is Audi, which has reportedly found that its latest diesel-hybrid R18 prototype isn’t as fast as the legendary racers it succeeded. The solution: a long-tail version R18 E-Tron Quattro, which may not be as long as those LMPs past, but is hoped to help Audi keep its edge.
After announcing it just last week, Audi has been caught on video testing the new lengthened R18 at Monza in Italy before it debuts at Spa this weekend. Will it prove fast enough to score another win for Audi at Le Mans? Only time will tell, but it sure sounds awesome.
