The mysterious Audi R8 GT spied at the Ring last year has reared its pretty ahead again, with these latest spy shots revealing the GT variant of its flagship model is next in line for a refresh as part of facelifting the R8 range for 2014. Some sources claim the model could in fact be a GT variant of the new R8 V10 Plus. Carrying the R8 GT Sport or R8 RS moniker, the limited edition model would compete with the SLS AMG Black Series. Distinguishing features include a front spoiler and winglets, enlarged side intakes, and an oversized rear wing.

It's also wearing large brake calipers and cross-drilled carbon-ceramic rotors. With the R8 V10 Plus rated at 550 hp and the limited edition R8 GT at 560 hp, we would expect the new special edition model to have the 5.2-liter V10 cranked up closer to 600 hp. If the prototype turns out to be the R8 GT, it could debut later this year as a 2014 model. A special edition R8 GT, on the other hand, would likely be introduced in 2015, which is the last expected model year for the current-gen R8.
