Baby Driver Swaps His Subaru For A Porsche 918 Spyder In Top 5

Did Porsche trust the Baby Driver actor to tame the hybrid 918 hypercar? Watch the video to find out.

Last year, Ansel Elgort starred in Baby Driver, a film about a skilled getaway driver trying to escape his life of crime. Directed by Edgar Wright, the film features several incredible car chase scenes with impeccable driving meticulously choreographed to the film’s musical soundtrack, including the standout opening scene in which a Subaru WRX evades police. Elgort grew so attached to the Subaru that Sony gave the actor one of the stunt cars for his birthday.

And now he’s swapped his Subaru for a Porsche 918 Spyder in the first episode of Porsche’s Top 5 second season. Unsurprisingly, he came away thoroughly impressed after being taken for a spin in the hybrid hypercar with Porsche test driver Lars Kern at the wheel. In the video, Kern talks through the ”top five most stunning features “of the Porsche 918 Spyder.

Kern starts with a rundown of the car’s design and aerodynamics. Compared to other, more aggressive-looking hypercars, the 918 Spyder has a restrained design, while its magnesium wheels, carbon mirrors and roof help shed weight. Kern also shows Elgort the 918 Spyder’s carbon body, and of course its mid-mounted hybrid powertrain that produces a combined output of 887 horsepower. Lars also shows Elgort the 918 Spyder’s Burmester Sound System resulting in an improvised performance from the actor, who is also a talented musician. Obviously, we’re much more interested in the glorious sound of the hypercar’s 4.6-liter V8 engine.

Compared to previous Porsche Top 5 Series episodes, this one was rather weak. The interactions between Elgort and Kern seem stilted, and the longer running time made it lack focus. Unlike other episodes, you don't feel like you've come away learning anything new. Elgort didn’t do any of the high-speed driving in Baby Driver – that duty was reserved for professional stunt driver Jeremy Fry. Did Porsche hand over the keys and trust the actor to tame the 918 Spyder? You’ll have to watch the video to find out.
