People stashing cars away to auction a few years later with almost no miles seems to be the thing to do these days. It's easy to find low-mileage mothballed vehicles for sale on auction sites, but few are as rare as this one. This 2019 Subaru WRX STI S209 is up for auction on Bring a Trailer right now, and it could draw quite a result. Dealers marked them up right off the truck, so it wouldn't be surprising to see this one climb well past any reasonable point.

This car is number 29 of just 209 cars produced for the United States, and its odometer shows just 139 miles - a delivery distance for many automakers and dealers. The practically brand-new Subaru still wears the protective plastics on its steering wheel and still carries the annoying airbag tags on its glove box.

Subaru massaged the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine for this car, giving it a larger HKS turbo, an upgraded intercooler, and several other upgrades. Output increased from 310 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque to 341 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission sends that fury to all four wheels, and front/rear limited-slip differentials are standard. The car features an intercooler water spraying system that allows the driver to activate additional intake cooling using a button on the steering wheel.

The S209 was a genuine performer, with 0-60 mph coming up in under six seconds. It also looked the part thanks to unique 19-inch wheels with Dunlop summer tires and that standalone rear wing. Subaru says the wider wheels and tuned suspension give the S209 the ability to pull more than 1.0 g on the skidpad.

The newest WRX is different from its predecessors in a way that many feel robbed it of its spirit and absolutely robbed it of any style it had left. Worse still, there will be no new STI version as Subaru believes it wouldn't be around long enough to justify its own existence. That means your only choice is to look at older model years if you want one. Whether a super-limited S209 is the STI for you is entirely up to your wallet.

This auction still has three days left at the time of writing, and with 17 bids, it's seen plenty of interest. While the STI S209 had an MSRP of around $64,000 when new, the bidding is already at $83,000 and could climb further, perhaps past $100,000. Its extremely limited production run and the fact that many people feel nostalgic about older WRX generations may give this car the push it needs. We hope that the winning bidder racks up a few more than the indicated 139 miles.
