The Batmobile is undoubtedly one of the most iconic cars in Hollywood and TV and has undergone numerous changes over the years. When we last saw the Batmobile on the big screen in 'Batman V Superman' and 'Dawn of Justice,' it was an armored tank loaded with missile launchers and machine guns. It was an evolution of the military-inspired Tumbler Batman drove in 'The Dark Knight' trilogy. By contrast, the new Batmobile looks relatively tame.

Set to star in 'The Batman' directed by Matt Reeves, the new Batmobile looks like a classic American muscle car rather than a heavily armored tank in new photos shared by the director on Twitter. Not that we're complaining.

The front seems to be inspired by a 1960s Dodge Charger or Ford Mustang, while the rear features massive fenders and striking taillights that look like they were lifted from a modern supercar. Dominating the rear is an exposed engine positioned between the rear wheels that is either a very powerful V8 or a V10.

While the custom car looks like it belongs in a Mad Max or Fast & Furious movie, the Caped Crusader's new ride returns to the franchise's roots. In the original comics and 1960s TV show, the Batmobile was a modified sports car in contrast to the tank-style Batmobiles Batman has driven in the recent films.

Sadly, we're going to have to wait a while before we get to see the new Batmobile in action. Starring Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrel, 'The Batman' releases in theaters on June 25, 2021.

Plot details are unknown, but the film will be another reboot of the Batman film franchise and focus on a younger version of Bruce Wayne. Originally, Ben Affleck was going to reprise his role as the Caped Crusader, but Batman will instead be played by Robert Pattinson.
