It's controversial, but at least it has small teeth.
The BMW 2 Series is one of our favorite coupes, mainly because it underpins the simply epic M2 CS, a car that is undoubtedly one of BMW's greatest hits. Although the M2 is very different from the 1 Series M that came before, the new 2 Series is even more of a departure in terms of styling. We knew this when we saw a leak of the car a few months ago, and heavily camouflaged prototypes haven't convinced us otherwise. Now that one of our favorite rendering artists has worked off the latest spy shots, we're even more certain that the next 2 Coupe will be seriously divisive.
On the one hand, we've been spared the ghastly, elongated, buck-toothed grilles of the new 4 Series, but on the other, BMW is bringing us a car without double rings in the headlights, and for some BMW fanatics, this is just as offensive as a front-wheel-drive BMW. Still, a case can be made for the fact that the 2 Series is creating its own identity, and the above renders certainly depict that. Somehow, the new 2 actually looks more muscular as a result of its unique headlights, although we're still not sure about that squashed-in rear end.
Make no mistake, these renders are not some flight of fancy intended to wow people - this is almost certainly exactly what the new model will look like. Naturally, some form of convention will be adhered to, with M240i variants expected to bear unique color accents, different grilles, and most likely a set of angular exhaust tips - all of which will be lightly restyled copies of what can be found on the G20 BMW M340i. While the styling is certainly different, people who remember the name Chris Bangle will remember that it doesn't matter what a Bimmer looks like or what engine it has - as long as it drives brilliantly. Get that right, BMW, and you'll retain our loyalty.
