Bizarre Chevy Camaro ZL1 Ban Coming To An End

Muscle Cars / Comments

Good news for the Camaro SS, too.

The Chevrolet Camaro continues to be temporarily out of production due to the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage, meaning customers are limited to what's currently available on dealership lots. General Motors hasn't announced when the assembly line will start back up again for what will very likely be the 2022 model at this point. And speaking of the 2022 Camaro, Chevy has reportedly fixed one vital issue that forced a sales ban in two states.

If you recall, last December we reported that California and Washington state residents could not order the 2021 Camaro ZL1 and ZL1 1LE, SS, and 2SS trims for delivery after January 1, 2021 due to restrictions regarding the muscle car's copper brake pads.

Customers could still purchase those trims from existing stock, however. Still, a sales ban on one of America's three muscle cars is never a good thing. But the good news is that Chevy confirmed the issue will be resolved for 2022. GM Authority has now learned Chevy will offer a copper-free performance brake system for the new model year, but only in those two states. The new system also includes goodies like Brembo six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, and we expect to hear more details in the coming few months. Chevy has never explained why those copper brake pads were so problematic, though it's likely the upgraded Brembo brakes on those trims were the source.

It wasn't a difficult issue to resolve but was annoying for dealers because they couldn't place additional orders once the clock struck 2021. The Camaro is not one of Chevy's best-sellers and falls behind both the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger, so the monetary damage has likely been very minimal.

And this is nothing in comparison to the situation in the UK and Europe where Camaro V8 models are banned outright for failing to meet new emissions laws. What could be interesting in the years to come is whether California and Washington-only Camaros become collector's cars. Unique features and situations like this have been known to increase values.
