When we last spotted a prototype BMW 1 Series out testing, we assumed it was a facelift for the current F40 generation car. But thanks to a document (pictured below) obtained by our spy photographers, we can now confirm that the 1 Series will skip its Life Cycle Impulse (BMW speak for facelift) and enter a new generation called the F70. The document reveals that the SOP (start of production) is scheduled for July 24, 2023. It specifically mentions a 116i base model, which is highly unlikely to be sold in the USA.

In fact, we doubt the 1 Series will be sold stateside in any capacity. BMW hasn't offered its smallest car here since the rear-wheel-drive E87 1 Series Coupe ended production in 2013. It was replaced by the 2 Series Coupe, while a separate model called the 2 Series Gran Coupe (F44) was more closely related to the front-wheel-drive 1 Series (F40).

We imagine the 1 Series will have much in common with the BMW X1. If it were to come to the US as the next-generation 2 Series Gran Coupe, the range would likely include a 228i version with 241 horsepower and an M235i model with over 300 hp. The current 2 Series GC uses an Aisin-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission, but the X1 has since switched to a seven-speed dual-clutch unit from Getrag.

These latest spy shots give us our best look yet at the production headlights, which appear smoother in shape than the outgoing car. The design reminds us a bit of the first-generation Ford Focus but in a good way. The taillights and rear end are mostly covered, but we can spot the recessed door handles present on all modern BMWs.

There are no photos showing the interior, but we'd expect the 1 Series to use a similar layout to the X1. That means two curved displays, including a center touchscreen but no iDrive controller.

BMW has not confirmed if the 2 Series Gran Coupe will get a second generation. Still, the German automaker has stated its commitment to offering affordable models even though Mercedes-Benz has announced it will phase them out.

If the 2 Series Gran Coupe is canceled, the X1 and X2 will likely be the only US-bound models to use the updated UKL2 platform.
