BMW 3 Series Plug-in Hybrid Coming Soon

Spy Shots

Set to be unveiled later this year.

These spy shots reveal BMW is working hard on bringing the 3 Series Plug-in Hybrid to market. Out cold weather testing somewhere in Scandinavia, the 3er is visually identical to the stock model save for a small charging port cover on the left front fender. Powerplant details are unknown, but it’s likely to borrow the BMW X5 eDrive concept’s powertrain, which was recently unveiled at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

That consists of a 95-hp electric motor and a turbo-four unit that combine to deliver 61.8 mpg, a sub-seven second 0-62 mph time and a 75 mph top speed. It could also go for 19 miles on electric power alone. Given the 3 series is lighter and smaller, expect these numbers to be improved upon when the hybrid variant is unveiled later this year.
