If you're in the market for a diesel, the Germans are where it's at. Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Mercedes all offer oil-burning cars in the US. BMW currently offers the X5 with a diesel in American showrooms, but it's getting company. At the upcoming New York Auto Show, BMW will introduce the 328d – a diesel version of its 3 Series sedan – to the US market. The 328d packs a four-cylinder turbo-diesel with a respectable 180 horsepower but 280 lb-ft of torque, propelling it to 60 in 7.2 seonds and returning over 40 mpg.
