Carmaker collaborates with The North Face to create epic winter concept.
Imagine going on a ski vacation and, if you're anything like us (but have more money), you'll more likely than not picture yourself clad in North Face gear and driving a BMW crossover up to the mountain. So it may seem only natural that the two have teamed up to showcase this concept at CES.
Created by BMW's Designworks studio in collaboration with The North Face, the concept is a lightweight and innovative camper trailer. And it not only looks sleeker than any we've ever seen, but it's clad in some rather trick high-tech material.
The North Face calls it Futurelight, and it uses "nanospinning” technology to make for a seamless and waterproof yet breathable outer shell, stretched over a geodesic-dome frame.
If the idea sounds familiar, you might be thinking of the GINA Light Visionary concept that BMW revealed over a decade ago. The conceptual roadster used soft and flexible fabric bodywork instead of hard metal or composite body panels to create a flexible and intriguing form. Designworks adapted the idea to the outdoor-equipment manufacturer's new material to create this camper concept, riding on a giant pair of wagon wheels with typically Teutonic design elements.
"We combined both physical and digital worlds to showcase this material, ensuring the holistic vision of the brand was clearly communicated, while giving people a real ‘hands-on’ experience,” said Designworks LA studio director Laura Robin. "Thinking about extreme performance in new and unexpected ways from our experience of working across multiple industries, helped us to provide consumers with a unique and never before seen insight into the very heart of the material and its key attributes.”
The trailer may never be put into production, but we could easily picture towing it behind a new X7 for a winter weekend in the Alps if it were.
