Since Brock Yates created the sea-to-sea Cannonball dash across the United States in the early 1970s, many have dreamed of accomplishing what Yates could be done: the trip from New York City to Redondo Beach, California in just over a day. Before the era of speed traps, speed cameras, and even more highway patrol officials, Yates was convinced that it was only a matter of time before his event would find its way before a grand jury for the obvious reasons.
The event still lives on today but in a more limited fashion. With the start and end point in South Bend, Indiana, drivers will venture to places including the BMW Performance Center in Greer, South Carolina, the newly paved Daytona International Speedway, and even a drag race at the Gainesville Raceway. As competitors prepare, Schaut Motorsports' Active Autowerke Supercharged E90 M3 is also taking shape. It has a 4.0-liter V8 with a intercooled supercharger kit, six-speed manual, and numerous other performance enhancers.
All told, there's 638 hp at 460 lb-ft of torque. We'll continue to find out more about the cars and people taking part in this year's spring event.
