Set to arrive late 2015.
Next spring will see the arrival of the 2015 BMW i8, and if Bimmerpost's claim is correct, the i8 Spyder will follow in late 2015. A BMW source revealed the carmaker has now officially approved production of the drop-top plug-in hybrid sports car. An i8 Spyder was shown internally; finished in the same Solar Orange that adorns the i3, complete with blue accents.
The production model will have styling inspired by the i8 Spyder Concept with some design cues borrowed from the i8 Coupe. The hardtop's powerplant and drivetrain will also carry over, so a 1.5-liter, turbocharged, three-cylinder engine combined with an electric motor for a combined output of 362 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The BMW i8 is currently sold out for 2014, so if you missed out, consider waiting for the i8 Spyder.
