Your SUV can finally get some funky paint and epic wheels.
BMW has learned from the likes of Porsche and others that those with money love to stand out in a crowd. Over the past couple of years, BMW has progressively made personalization more accessible to more models, particularly through the Individual program. Sometimes, these colors can be a bit of a letdown, but more often than not, the results look stunning. For new offerings like the latest M3 and M4, bespoke colors are being offered, and now the X range of crossovers and SUVs is finally getting access to personalized paint options, but there is a bit of a caveat.
The new models include the X3 and X4 30i and M40i guise, as well as all M Sport variants of the X5, X6, and X7. Previously, only the latter three could be customized, so the addition of the X3 and X4 is the important news. For the cheapest X3 able to access these options, the range of available paint finishes includes metallic finishes like Ruby Red, Malachite Green, and the ever-popular Black Sapphire. Uni (gloss) options include Urban Green and Nardo Grey, while Frozen (matte) finishes include Marina Bay Blue and Deep Grey. In total, eight Individual colors are available here. The X1, which is due to be updated soon, is not yet a part of the program. Clearly, the more expensive the car, the more options you get access to (48 colors, in the case of the X5, X6, and X7).
For the time being, colors available on a certain model on the visualizer won't be accessible to those models not listed with the color. That said, it is possible that more colors will be added to more models eventually, meaning that something like Speed Yellow could conceivably be possible on an X7 in the future.
The downside to the selection of Individual paints is that it deletes the Automatic Lane Change Assistant feature, apparently because certain paints will reflect and scatter light differently, in ways that can disrupt the system.
Elsewhere in the configurator, you can also choose from a new selection of wheels and the interior can be specced in Individual options. On the X3, for example, Merino leather in Fiona Red/Black looks spectacular.
As for pricing, the X3 and X4 colors have been revealed to cost $4,500, but nothing has yet been said of the cost of fancier colors available on higher models.
