Despite the i4 and iX switching to iDrive 8, BMW is still improving its existing iDrive 7 infotainment system with regular over-the-air software updates. In recent updates, BMW has added an Amazon Alexa-powered voice assistant for US owners, Remote Engine Start that heats or cools down the cabin before you enter the vehicle, and Uneven Road Surface warnings.

Now, BMW has deployed the third major software update of the year for 2.5 million cars. Available now for over 30 BMW models, the latest version of BMW Operating System 7 (Ver. 21-07) expands and improves various driver assists.

With the latest update installed, BMW's improved Lane Departure Warning prevents "unnecessary steering interventions" on narrow roads without center markings. The update also adds a new Assisted View. With Active Cruise Control activated, the car recognizes the traffic situation around the vehicle in moving traffic, even in foggy weather conditions. The carmaker says that BMW Maps can also plan routes and predict arrival times even more accurately than before thanks to the enhanced RTTI (Real-Time Traffic Information).

Using BMW Connected Music, Spotify podcast playlists are also now available. Streaming music and podcasts using an Android smartphone also benefits from an "advanced volume control" providing an "enhanced sound experience."

Finally, BMW M Sound Control offers a "unique new sound experience" for the BMW M3 and BMW M4, enabling owners to customize the interior sound of the engine, changing gears, and driving modes.

BMW models with BMW Operating System 7 produced from July 2021 already come with the latest version of iDrive 7, but you can check the software version and available upgrades in the settings under Remote Update. Initially, the update will be rolled out in Germany before becoming available in other territories. It's worth noting that the latest update can't be installed on BMWs with software older than version 20-07 until the intermediate version has been downloaded and installed.
