Whether you like it or not, front-wheel drive BMWs are on the way. In fact, we'll be seeing the first model to debut for the 2013 model year. Early reports are indicating that this first car will be the subcompact 1 Series GT. Another interesting rumor is that this car will be closely related to the next generation Mini Clubman. There's even rumors suggesting BMW will build an entry-level roadster (Z2?) to compete with the Mazda Miata.

Overall, BMW Group will launch up to 13 front-wheel drive cars between 2013 and 2018. The next generation Mini Cooper is expected in 2013 as well. There's no doubt that BMW Group's upcoming change to front-wheel drive will be controversial for many. However, the automaker needs to make sure they comply with upcoming fuel regulations for both the U.S. and Europe. It's still unknown whether they'll expand this configuration to their larger cars, but our guess is that this will be highly unlikely.

A bit controversial? Without a doubt and we'll have to wait and see whether this will seriously alter the ultimate driving machine.
