BMW Loses U.S. Luxury Sales Crown to Mercedes-Benz

Sales

BMW's three-peat gets stopped in its tracks.

Despite a last minute surge that saw BMW deliver 37,389 cars in December, Mercedez-Benz put a kabash on BMW's attempt to become the U.S. luxury-vehicle sales leader for a third straight year. Mercedes posted a modest 33,007 deliveries in December, mostly led by the entry-level CLA, mid-sized E class, and the high-end S-class cars. Yet, Mercedes sold a company record 312,534 cars in 2013, 3,254 more than BMW. The last time it won the US luxury sales crown was back in 1999, with 189,437 cars sold.
