Everyone loves a good drag race, especially when it's between two of the most respected premium sports cars on the road today. We've covered a few BMW vs. Audi drag races in the past, but this one is a beautiful display of both brands' strong and weak points. In this short YouTube video posted by Daniel Abt, we get to see the mighty BMW M4 Competition xDrive take on one of the biggest non-sleeper sleepers on the road today: the Audi RS5 Coupe. The video covers everything from quarter-mile racing, to 800-meter sprints and even a rolling race. Are you a BMW bandit or an Audi aficionado? It's time to place your bets.
Before we get to the action, let's take a closer look at the competitors, starting with the Audi RS5 Coupe. This German bullet train is powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 that delivers 444 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The RS5 Coupe will sprint to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, and top out at 174 mph when fitted with the Dynamic Plus package. In terms of overall weight, the Audi tips the scale at 3,990 pounds. The BMW M4 Competition xDrive is powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine developing 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque; that's a fair bit more than the Audi, and it weighs in at 3,979 lbs. The M4 Competition has been seen doing the 0-60 mph sprint in the 3.2-second range (the claimed time is 3.4 seconds), so this race might be over before it even started.
In the video, the two cars line up for the quarter-mile race. The BMW driver gets a bad start off the line and the Audi takes an early lead, but the BMW starts catching up at the end. The results speak for themselves: the Audi manages a 0-62 mph time of 3.51 seconds, a 62-124 mph time of 9.31 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of 11.61 seconds. The BMW splashes the 0-62 mph sprint in only 3.27 seconds, the 62-124 mph dash is recorded at only 7.73 seconds, and the quarter-mile mark is crossed in 11.14 seconds. It's clear where this is going…The 800-meter sprint sees both cars nail the launch, but the BMW proves too powerful, and absolutely dominates the Audi with a time of 17.61 seconds over the Audi's time of 18.34 seconds. The rolling race is no different: despite missing a shift, the BMW will clearly walk all over the Audi as soon as both cars slip into third gear. This particular drag race is a definitive win for the M4.
