BMW M4 CSL Can't Beat Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Around French Club Circuit

The lofty track car just didn't have the gusto to topple the Stuttgart sports car.

Although it is fully street-legal, the all-new BMW M4 CSL has been made with track use in mind and we are glad to see that some drivers are taking this very seriously. French-based publication Motorsport Magazine decided to see just how capable the new Bavarian athlete is and put it to the task at the Nevers Magny-Cours Club circuit where it nailed a time of 1:20.10 minutes.

For context, the same publication achieved a time of 1:20.40 in the previous generation M4 GTS and 1:19.13 in the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS around the 2.74-mile circuit. The result isn't all too bad considering the relatively lofty 3,640-pound mass figure.

We already knew that the M4 CSL was going to be a true tack weapon after it took to the Nurburgring and claimed a time of 7:15.64. With this result, it became the fastest BMW to lap the Nordschleife after besting the M4 GTS's time of 7:27.88. Interestingly, with Jorg Weidinger at the wheel, it was even faster than the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS which ran a time of 7:16.00 while being driven by Christian Gebhardt.

As for the Nevers Magny-Cours Club, the M4 CSL slots in just behind the McLaren 12C Spider's time of 1:19.80 but bests the 458 Italia by 1:20.16. BMW appears to have taken a decade to get its compact performance coupe into supercar territory.

The BMW M4 CSL got the Bavarian fans cheering after reviving one of the brand's most iconic badges. Just 1,000 units are set to be produced with each housing a twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six that develops 543 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, although some dyno runs show that the real figure is closer to 605 hp and 531 lb-ft.

BMW claims that its fastest track weapon will sprint from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds and 0-120 mph in 10.5 seconds before it reaches its top speed of 191 mph. These figures are not bad, but if you can manage to get a reservation for one, you are going to need to fork out a hefty $139,900.
